How to Punch Holes in 5 Liter Fluid Bags

The 2 round re-enforced “hole” sites, one on each side of the outlet ports, are not perforated as in the past where the Blue Spike Hangers on the International WIN, Ltd., STAT Large Animal I.V. Set (recorder No.: IV1000) used to be conntected to the bags to prevent the bag spikes from being pulled out of the bags by the patient. There is an easy way to solve the problem and create the needed holes. It does add an extra, minor, quick step during set-up of the I.V. fluids and requires a one-time purchase costing no more than $10.00.

Purchase General Tools, Revolving Punch Pliers, Model #72 at Home Depot or at an Ace Hardware – See figure 1. Select the largest punch, position it within the round re-enforced “hole” sites adjacent to the outlet ports and punch holes through the plastic.

This method is much safer than trying to cut holes with a scalpel or knife or to forcefully punch a ball-point pen through the plastic. And, no, a typical hand-held paper hole punch doesn’t work because it is not sharp enough to cut through the plastic.
